1. Which species of oak tree is the fastest growing and producing acorns?

slow house sale

Of course “fastest” is relative since the whole family of oaks are slow-growing. We just bought our house a short time ago and are planning on being here for quite a long time (30+ years). I also have some related questions:
2. I have seen some oak trees for sale that are 6-8 feet tall, but their age is not mentioned. What age would you estimate them to be?
3. For some shade without the wait of oaks, I was wanting to plant some Silver Maples as well. What distance should be between them and the oaks?
4. I saw neighbors having trees planted last fall, is that the only time of year that is good for planting them? When are the best times of year?
5. We have about 10′ of property behind our fence at the back of the yard. Is that enough space to grow these trees without encroaching on the neighbor’s property? It gets plenty of moisture and sunlight there and there are no underground cables or pipes.

We live near St. Louis and so we are near the border between hardiness zones 5 & 6.

The fastest growing trees will produce the quickest shade, of course, but they are usually junk trees. Silver maple, tulip poplar, lombardy poplar, and box elder are very fast growing, but they are weak and easily beat up by the wind. They will also be TOO big in a few years. I suggest pin oak if you want an oak tree. They grow fast and tolerate wet locations. Nursery suppliers grow their trees pretty quickly, so I would guess that a 6 to 8 foot tree is four years old or so. In my opinion, Autumn is the best time to plant. The tree has all winter to get settled in before it starts to grown. You can plant now too, but don’t wait till April or May! You might consider planting a silver maple along with an oak or two with the idea of enjoying the maple’s shade for 15 years or so, then cut it down so the oaks have room to take over.

try to stay away from silver maples the have a tendency to fail (come down in winds ) beach trees are nice and grow prity fast but get very big so dont plant neav power lines or the house

red oaks and pin oaks are the ” fastest” growing oaks get them inlected once a year in the spring and thatll take off you can allso prun them once every 2 or 3 year but dont take more then 25% of the green or youll stress the tree proper pruning will help the trees grow faster and will help root groth too

    good luck
