Can I rent part of my house?

rent large house
I have in the past rented part of my house to my inlaws. Currently my neighbor has brought it to my attention that it is bothering her and that I should not be renting to anyone, since it is invading her privacy (Since my house has 2 storys and hers only has one). I thought since I puchased the house I would be able to do what ever I wanted in my house with out endangering any one? Does any one have ideas how to deal with this delema? I want to rent part of my house out since it is too large for me. What can I do?
Currently the neighbor has put up trees on the property line. And still they want us to stop renting to any one.

Go ahead and rent to your inlaws. The set up is probably that you are sharing some of the space, so what you have is really kinda like a Room mate scenario, except the “roommates” are your inlaws.

    Go for it.

Just make sure your vehicles are all safely parked in the driveway. Watch your noise.

The invasion of privacy matter is probably silly. Consult with the local law enforcement offices. Don’t be afraid to call them. I have called them many time, and have learned a lot.

well you can check with the local city for an ordinances against renting out rooms. since you have been renting to family – you could say – they moved in to help you pay the morgage. What would your neighbor say if you had 6 children? would she tell you to give up half your kids?!?!?!?!

Some areas have a limit n the number of boarders you can have without having a liscense (most areas you can rent out rooms to up to 2 people without needing a liscense) check with the city though – you neighbor may have already done so – before she has you fined – find out from the city – FYI to get a lisc usually just requires a home inspection and like $200 a year for the lisc!!

burn your neighbor out and while they are standing there watching the remains of their sad life go up in smoke and flames, ask them if they would like to rent the garage..

There is nothing wrong with renting to your in-laws. You didn’t sign up for anything stating you could only have 2 people living in your home. And they are family. Your neighbor has no business complaining that your home intrudes on her privacy. If she doesn’t like it, suggest she builds a fence.

However, if you are renting to non-family members, you will need to check with the state laws to be sure you’re in compliance. And if you live in a Homeowners Association, you’ll need to check the by-laws to be sure this is allowable (if it isn’t, your neighbor CAN raise a fuss!).

Most importantly, where does your neighbor get the idea that she can dictate what goes on in your home, just becuase yours is a bit taller? She needs to move to Wyoming, buy 300 acres, and live alone if she doesn’t want neighbors.

I don’t think that the problem is whether you are renting part of your house or not. The real problem might be that maybe your neighbor feels that there might be a “peeping Tom” situation and that is the best way that he/she could phrase it without hurting your feelings about your In-laws.
