housing benefit

im thinking of moving away from my council house, i have been told that i need to pay of all rent arrears by a friend before i can move into a private let and claim housing benefit, is this true? or can i still keep the current arrangement with the council and move into a new property?
after checking with housing benefit, i now know i will be entitled to housing benefit for a private property as long as it its of suitable accomodation for my requirments. thanks for all your answers

Send me an invoive for the arrears. I’ll pay it for you. I’m doing it anyway, let’s cut out the middleman.

No and stop getting benefits.Work for the money you get.

  3. Paula O Says:

The council will want you to pay any money owed for your rent before you move out to a private dwelling, your only option would be to come to an arrangement with them where they can take a certain amount directly from your benefits to pay off the arrears, it doesn’t have to be much even £3 a week or so. Also to the previous answer below it is about time people realised that the vast majority of people do not want to live on benefits but it is through no fault of there own why they have to claim these benefits.

Why not stay in your council accommodation because it is cheaper than living in private rented and just work at paying off your debt rather than cost the taxpayer more money to keep you in private rented?

Also what private landlord will let to you if you have rent arrears elsewhere?

  5. COLIN T Says:

Let me get this straight – you are in rent arrears in a council house and you now want to move to a private let. Well, if you are in arrears with your present council rent, which will be substantially less than a private let rent, just how do you propose putting down the security deposit and month in advance for a private let. Incidentally, your financial standing will probably need to be checked before someone will rent to you anyway and you might find rent arrears not something any private landlord is going to ignore.

  6. spring_rainbows Says:

No it shouldn’t affect your claim but and it’s a big but the council will reduce the amount you receive to cover your arrears. Either through the housing benefit or they will apply for an attachment of benefits. Another big but is that no private landlord will touch you in the financial crisis if you owe rent arrears, a landlord will ask for refrences and very few to none will accept people who ahve previously failed to pay there rent so be careful.

  7. LOU Says:

no decent private landlord will rent you a house if you have arrears in your current one

you will need references and and a deposit as well, if you cant pay the rent where you are why do you want to move private lets are more expensive than council you are lucky to have a council house in the 1st place.

stay where you are sort out your finances get yourself straight look for a job
