single person can i rent a two bed property?

i get income support and disability living allowance i have been on my local council list for over two years but no succes of getting a property just yet although they told me it would just be 28 days to wait im now so desperate to get some where to live that i have decided to go down the privatly renting route i know that housing benefit will pay £552 a month towards a property for me and because i am over 25 i am entitled to rent a one bedroom property but this is alot harder then it sounds as the area i live in alot of estate agents / landlords wont accept housing benefit the only calls on property that i have had is for two beds i was wondering if any one knows if i can go ahead and rent a two bed and pay the short fall in rent in which i could afford but i dont know if housing benefit will allow me to do this does can any one help please

    First step would be to contact your housing benefit agency. Explain the situation and I am sure they won’t have a problem with it. Also, they may know of some places they can recommend to you.

    Yes you can. They asses what benefit they will give you according to how many rooms you need so if you have an extra room they don’t pay housing benefit for that but they do for the ones you need.

    Also you should be able to sub let the spare room to make up the difference between what you get and what you pay.

    by the sound of the wording I take it you are in England. Well all councils have their own rules and regulations within the gov. guidelines. Best make an appointment to talk to local housing officer or his/her understudy.
    Actually a lot of landlords prefer people on benefit as they are sure of getting their rent.
    Or a housing agency will also be able to give you the info that you need whether you rent from them or elsewhere
