How does my 17 year old working affect my housing benefit?
My 17 year old is about to start full time work.

Who is going to tell the Social ..!? … Just plead ignorance..& absentmindedness.. you would be silly to tell them. Your Daughter should have got herself a council pad of her own before she started work

I don’t think the council would expect your child to contribute to the rent until they are 18, so in theory your rent and council tax benefit should stay the same. As far as your own benefits are concerned, the DSS may take it into account when deciding how much you are entitled to. They may say you should expect a contribution of so much per week from your child. Ask your local lone parent advisor to work it out for you.

its best to be honest with the council as they can take away your benefits if you lie,it probably won’t affect that much anyway but honesty is the best policy.

I’m from the uk. and my mum is on housing benefit i started working at 16 and my mums rent didnt get affected till i was 18.
Don’t know if it will be the same. do you know anyone that have been through this as you could ask them what they done.

I think you will find their income will be partially used int he calculations for your allowances.
The best thing is to contact the council and be honest. If you dont they can make things difficult for you. It always best to be upfront.
