How does housing benefit work?

housing benefit

If you are in a couple and you both work but one of you gave up work to look after the baby, could you claim housing benefit. I realise it all depends on how much you earn etc but my question is, if you voluntary give up work do you have to wait a year before you can claim (as I think this is the case with jobseekers allowance) or can you claim straight away.
Before anyone starts crying – I work, I always have done, and so has my partner, we arent scroungers, I’m just asking!
Merry crimbo!

it’s difficult to say, depends on your income…you get this benefit whether you gave up your job voluntarily on not…so you might as well apply for it, you get the form from the council offices. There is a maximum that is paid , so if you live in a prosperous area you may be asked to contribute…give it a try.
Also, what about getting a benefit check as you may be entitled to tax credits…go to your C.A.B. with information of your earnings etc.

Visit this site which will help you with Local Housing Allowance (there is no housing benefit anymore). You can calculate how much you may be entitled to using the sites calculator.
