Housing Benefit in Camden under JSA?
Dear all,
I’ve been receiving Job Seekers’ Allowance after being considered redundant for a couple of months now, and I have applied for housing benefit at my local borough (Lewisham). However, my tenancy agreement will terminate in a 1-month time, so I have started looking for 1-bedroom apartments. I have found a very good 1-bedroom apartment at the price of £1,000 a month, slightly more expensive than the one I’m living in now. What is the procedure to claim housing benefit from another borough? Is there any process that I can get a ‘pre-approval’ before signing any tenancy agreement? Is there any reason Camden might reject my claim?
Thank you so much in advance!
Also, I am willing to voluntarily work for the Amnesty International, just to change the monotonous daily job hunting process. Will help to let housing benefit office know about it? Thanks again.
According to LHA Direct website, the housing benefit allowance is maximum £365/week for a 1-bedroom flat, not £400 per month. Do I confuse things? Thanks for the reply.

If you’re single your maximum allowance is £420 a month. London tenants may be entitled to a slightly more generous allowance but certainly not a grand a month. Unless, of course, you already know you ARE entitled to a £1000. In which case, bye bye Birmingham hello London!
(Email me if you are entitled to a grand a month. Definitely food for thought.)
edit : Damn, you’re right! Who said the streets of London weren’t paved with gold?
