doubt if shorter than 6 months-normally 12 is called` short term` .

it`s free and may prevent ? moving in and then all hell on to get them out!
getting them in is the easy part-take care!

Yes the council will pay for however long they live there, whether it be 1 month or 12 years. But it takes the council about 6-8 weeks to process the claim and make the first payment which will leave your mum 2 months without rent. I would go and talk to the council in person, explain and ask them for more info on how it works.

The minimum lease is for 6 months and the landlord can chase you for rent if you leave early. The best thing is to be honest and ask for the lease to be mutually ended.
You will not be able to claim LHA (the new method of paying out housing benefit) for less than a 6 month lease.
One other point of warning. If people move in and begin a claim for LHA the money goes direct to them not to the landlord. By the time the claim is processed you will be in month 2. They will receive the rent by chq. If they are scam artists you wont get the money. Only once they are 8 clear weeks in arrears can you call the council and start the process to have the payments made direct to landlord but this will take time and they will most likely receive month 3 rent too. They then move on and you have basically had people in a flat or house for 3 months with no return.
I would be most suspicious of anyone telling me they only plan to be there for 3 months in this situation.
