Can I apply for Housing benefit if I am on the Council home waiting list?

housing benefit

Unfortuantly I am unable to work due to having Arthritis.
I am now in my late 20s and still living at home with the parents but would like to move out and gain some independance.

I have been on the council home waiting list for 4 years and I would like to consider renting whilst I wait.
In order to do so I would need help in paying the rent which is why I also wanted to claim housing benefit.

Is it possible to be on the housing list and claim housing benefit for another property?
Thanks Everyone

Barry L

it has been in the past i only assume you still can

  2. angler Says:

Yes no problem. But the council would consider you lesser
priority if you have your own place.More room.

You can be in a private rent whilst still being on a social housing list. You would need a deposit for private rented accommodation and apply for housing/council tax benefit as soon as you move in – not before. Application forms are available at District Council Offices/Sub offices and some CAB’s.

They keep changing the goal posts for stuff like this so to get the most accurate answer you need to phone your local Housing Benefit office or Citizens Advice office. They’ll keep you right.

What makes you think that you are entitled to money that has been stopped from hard working people ?
Does the world owe you ?

  6. styler4ever Says:

yes it is definitely possible and from my experience it might make them give you a place faster as it would work out a lot cheaper for them than you renting a private property.

  7. stormydays Says:

Yes of course you can claim

  8. door Says:

You can claim housing benefit all you have to do is find accommodation suggest housing association as with HB they know the rent is safe.
You would be entitled to a 2 bed house/flat etc as your allowed a spare bedroom.
Take care and good luck and just ignore the idiots who were born lucky because they have their health, show them 2 fingers.

I would start chasing the council and asking why you have been waiting 4 years. This is long enough to find you a home in even the most highly sort after area.
You are still living at home and because of this, they do not consider you a priority.
It sounds that you may have mobility problems due to your arthritis, ask about disabled accommodation or a ground floor flat.
Also if they continue to fob you off, go to your MP. I think you have been patient long enough.
