Forty five thousand dollars is owed. I was told by a town official that they would be starting foreclosure. Can they legally do that? Also, how can you get the specific details?

That is an awful lot of money to owe for taxes, or a very pricey house to have very high taxes. Usually they don’t let unpaid taxes go for more than 4 – 5 years before forcing a house sale to pay for the unpaid taxes. Yes, they can do that. There is a lot of information that can be pulled up on line concerning taxes. Not all counties post this information. If you want this house, you might have a better chance of talking with the owner and seeing if you can work something out with him BEFORE the house is actually set for a tax sale. Go to the county’s web site and see if you can pull up the owner’s name. Then do a search for the telephone number and get in contact with him. Best of luck.
