Buying a Repossessed house with furniture?
We are in the process of buying a repossessed house. The house is great and just what we are looking for. The only problem we have is that the house is still full of furniture and the estate agents state that it is sold as seen. It has been on the market for a year and no approaches have been made to recover the furniture. We have been back today and see that there are personal items, photos, electronic goods and furniture belonging to old occupants. Once we complete do these items automatically become ours. They would be very useful as we are first time buyers with no furniture what so ever.
But we just don’t want to commit any offences, does anyone know where do we stand in relation to this?
What happens if the old occupants come back and demand there belongings back?
Has anyone else had a similar situation?
Thanks for your help
Gareth

No problem.
The personal belongings are considered abandoned by law. In most cases 90 days is long enough to be considered abandoned. Most certainly a YEAR is.
You would have every right to the furniture, and anything you don’t want, you are entitled to dispose of or sell in a yard sale.
No one would come back a year later demanding their property. They already expect it is gone. If they should come back, you have the option of charging them for storing it. But I sincerely doubt that will ever happen.

well they are yours if the house is sold as is
as for pictures and personal items i would just get a bin and name it and store it for a “just in case” purpose

If the house is being sold as-is, whatever has been left in the house becomes yours as of the time and date of the closing. They have had time to get their stuff, it is therefore abandoned and you can either use it or throw it away.

I bought a foreclosed house owned by a bank back in 1983. Just before closing “someone” (I think the previous owner) got into the house and removed the washer and dryer that had been left there.
I would not have been mad if they had not scraped the walls on the way out.
I would have considered it theft from me if I had already closed. As it was I considered it theft from the bank. They were not concerned and I did not decide to back out over the incident.

Dump the rubbish, keep what you want and call in the house clearers and get a few bob back if its furniture, and have a meal on the proceeds.
